Posted 09/10/2020 08:30 UK. A supercharged version of Honda’s Africa Twin is being developed at the firm’s R&D facility in Japan – as revealed in new documents filed with the Japanese Patent Office. Three detailed engineering patents, each around dozen pages long, go into detail of the bike’s innovations, which include an engine-driven
It raises an interesting question Kev. Are Honda calculating fuel usage as you suggest or are they monitoring fuel flow. I had assumed they were doing it by the tank sensor because the light always first comes on when you are travelling down hill, and the average fuel consumption is hopelessly inaccurate for the first 10 or 20 miles of a full tank.
Since this is the non-dual clutch (DCT) version, fuel tank capacity is limited to 18.8 liters. At best, I got a fuel economy of 20.8 kilometers per liter. When I got a little excited on the CRF1100L’s throttle, fuel economy dropped to only 17.8 kilometers per liter.
The worst-kept secret in motorcycling has been confirmed with Honda unveiling the full tech specs for the bigger, narrower and higher-tech Africa Twin CRF1100L at the AIMExpo motorcycle show in Ohio, USA. Of course, the biggest news is that the engine has gone from 998cc to a longer-stroke 1084cc with power up from 70kW to 75kW. All details

Estimated range left based on average economy calculation. = = = My last three Hondas, including the Africa Twin, appeared to be spot on each time (to within 0.25L). I suppose the 250 mL difference maybe have been due to evaporation loss, especially when the bike bakes in the parking lot sunshine day in and day out. Evaporated fuel gets no mileage.

Best fuel consumption so far for a single tank with a passenger. You need to be very gentle with the throttle (good for the passenger) and be on 6th gear on lower speeds to reach it. It was both town and highway drive. Going to keep experimenting during the next trips, but I notice the fuel indicator drops too fast no matter what.

HONDA XRV750 AFRICA TWIN (1990-2003)) Economy Being a fairly soft, single cam, three-valve design also means the 750 Africa Twin’s V-twin is reasonably economical, too. Average MPG figures in the 50s should be expected (significantly better, for example, than Yamaha’s XTZ750 Super Ténéré) resulting in a potential range from that big 23
